To adults, social media like Facebook seem rife with dangers. There’s a long list of people who they don’t want to be looking at their kids’ pictures and profile pages, including:
Cyber bullies
Child molesters
Potential employers
Teenagers also know exactly who they don’t want to be looking at their Facebook pages:
Their parents
But the urge to connect, to belong, and to feel significant among peers is just so powerful at that age, that risks are highly discounted when weighed by a teenager’s mind. I know, because I was like that too. And all of those adults who are wagging their fingers at teens who are “over-sharing” would probably do the exact things their kids are doing today, if only they had the technology back then.
